Amazing Grace

"You are not 'born again' because you accept Christ; rather, you believe because the Holy Spirit has resurrected your soul and given you the gift of faith. Once alienated, stubborn, independent, and rebellious---disinterested in the things of God---now you recognize your desperate need of Christ and cry out, 'Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner.'

This teaching is especially comforting when we are faced with loved ones who appear to us to be beyond the possibility of conversion. After all, repentance is not only difficult; it's downright impossible unless it is the work of God within the individual. This point is made well by the noble father, Ignatius.

'Pray for them, if so be they may repent, which is very difficult; but Jesus Christ, our true life, has the power of this.'
