The Ultimate Scandal

"The ultimate scandal of Christianity is in this: that God is merciful to the undeserving, to sinners, to those who have no merit but the merit of Christ to plead, and no argument but the humble, believing cry, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner.'"
-Alistair Begg from What Angels Wish They Knew

I like the quote from Alistair Begg titled "The Ultimate Scandal." However, not having read the book, "What Angels Wish They Knew," I don't know how this quote fits into the overall context of the book. I hope the book also highlights the necessity of repentance, leading to a changed life, which ultimately removes the scandal, and gives all the glory to God (1 Corinthians 1:26-31). Considering the mercy and grace of the triune God in delivering lost, guilty, Hell-deserving sinners from their sins, Titus 2:11-14 is particularly relevant: "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works." Yes, indeed. This scandal is of that into which angels long to look. Amazing love, how can it be that Thou my God should die for me! Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I live in a small town in Kentucky, and I think most of the people around here believe that once a man is saved, he can later lose his salvation.
I believed that way myself, but now I've come to understand this: If God were not sovereign, I could never be saved. Salvation is His work alone, and the Gospel (all that it is) is the most powerful work He has ever done.
I believe if I had even the tiniest thing to do with me being saved - I'd be going to hell. All the glory belongs to God.
