The Loss of a High View of God

"The church has surrendered her once lofty concept of God and has substituted for it one so low, so ignoble, as to be utterly unworthy of thinking, worshiping men. This she has done not deliberately, but little by little and without her knowledge; and her very unawareness only makes her situation all the more tragic. This low view of God entertained almost universally among Christians is the cause of a hundred lesser evils everywhere among us. A whole new philosophy of the Christian life has resulted from this one basic error in our religious thinking.

With our loss of the sense of majesty has come the further loss of religious awe and consciousness of the divine Presence. We have lost our spirit of worship and our ability to withdraw inwardly to meet God in adoring silence. Modern Christianity is simply not producing the kind of Christian who can appreciate or experience the life in the Spirit. The words, 'Be still, and know that I am God,' mean next to nothing to the self-confident, bustling worshiper in this middle period of the twentieth century.

This loss of the concept of majesty has come just when the forces of religion are making dramatic gains and the churches are more prosperous than at any time within the past several hundred years. But the alarming thing is that our gains are mostly external and our losses wholly internal; and since it is the quality of our religion that is affected by internal conditions, it may be that our supposed gains are but losses spread over a wider field."

Although I do not like to use the term, I think that these timely words of this great man of God were "prophetic" in their assessment and warning for the Church. I have recently been experiencing an almost overwhelming sense of disgust for what is being advertised as "Christianity". It breaks my heart to see the bride of our Lord, who He has given Himself for, so poorly imitated by impostors who dress up and act like harlots yet pretend they are the bride. I can almost forgive the Purpose-driven garbage and easy-believism when compared to some of the more blatant heretical movements that people are just eating up like candy. Whether it's Joel Osteen, William Young's The Shack, the Emergent church, the Word of Faith sinisters, folks like Todd Bentley, or these unbelievably twisted folks here:

what is being called Christianity by the majority of the deceived these days is completely antithetical to true Biblical Christianity. It breaks my heart. All these people just joyfully skipping down the wide road to destruction, while our gate, our good Shepherd stands just off that beaten path calling out to the sheep that belong to Him...

Why do so many people hold such a low view of the only, eminent creator and sustainer of all things? Why oh why do more people not see the glorious and awesome, fear-inspiring God--who has created everything and who alone has complete sovereignty over His entire creation--and fall down on their face and worship and plead with all humility and contrition for His mercy and grace?

I don't even know what to write. I came across this site while looking for the one I provided the link for above so that I could share with my wife some of the hollow and horrendous imitations of faith that are just swallowing up souls. Theirs is not a persecuted church, but a perverted one.

May God purify and sanctify His bride with the washing of her with His word. May He have mercy on He chooses, and may we who completely trust in Him help to restore a high view of God so that the lost can actually see Him lifted up. My prayer, o Lord, in Jesus name.
