Born of Water and the Spirit

Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
-John 2:5

What does Jesus mean when He says "of water and the Spirit"? Once again I am grateful for the insights from Pastor Jim McClarty of GCA.

Thanks for this post.

I'm making the rounds this morning to the blogs I frequent to thank the bloggers for their work. I visit your blog several times each week and while I don't frequently comment, I do want you to know I appreciate what you do. But primarily I thank and praise God for the Body of Christ.

Also, for another view on "water" in this passage, D.A. Carson did a great message on John 3. He cross-references Ezekiel 36:25-26 for the reason why our Lord chastises Nicodemus for not knowing this. It can be found at Monergism.com; search on "carson wind mp3" and you'll find it.
