Why Rick Warren?

It has recently been announced that John Piper has invited Purpose Driven Pastor Rick Warren to speak at the 2010 Desiring God Conference. This comes as a shock to many in the Reformed Community as they have been some of the harshest critics of Warren's pragmatic approach to ministry and "Church growth."

Back in February, Piper explained why he chose Warren as one of the speakers, listen here.

"I like him (Warren), and I'm frustrated with some of his stuff."

Upcoming Calvinism Webcast Debate

Day 1 replay can be heard here:

Day 2 replay can be heard here:
http://www.aomin.org/aoblog/index.php?itemid=3843

"For those interested, we will be covering three texts of Scripture on Thursday: John 6, Romans 8/9, and Ephesians 1. Each will have 8 minutes to provide their exegesis of the text; then we will have four minutes of cross-ex each, then three minute conclusions before moving on to the next text. I know, not a lot of time, but that still covers 90 full minutes (we will not be taking any breaks at all).

The following Thursday we will repeat the process, but this time covering Michael's chosen texts, Luke 13:34-35 (Deut 5:28-29) Ezek 18:21-32 (Jer 3:19-20; Ezek 22:30-31) I John 2:1-2 (2 Pet 2:1).

Remember, to make room for Michael's program (which cannot, like the DL, be moved around at will), we will be starting at 10am our time (1pm EDT)."

Your Journey To Sovereign Grace

Over a third of those that I polled recently came from a combination of Seeker-Sensitive or Southern Baptist Church backgrounds before embracing the Doctrines of Grace.

My own church background was from those same two, first growing up in a Southern Baptist Church and then later in my early twenties going to a more Seeker-Sensitive type of Mega Church.

After that I got a job as a delivery driver that led to me to be able to listen to a lot of Christian radio throughout the work day. My favorite channel was a Calvary Chapel channel which featured mostly Calvary Chapel preachers, but also aired Truth For Life with Alistair Begg and The Way of the Master Radio (WOTM).

After sensing the shallowness of the Mega Church environment, I almost began the search for a Calvary Chapel Church in my area... but one day I was listening to WOTM and heard Paul Washer's "Shocking Youth Message" and my world sort of turned upside down.

This phrase stuck in my mind,

"Salvation is not merely a human decision but a supernatural work of God."

Wow!

I could no longer argue against this strange Calvinism teaching on the discussion boards as I had been doing. I began to compile a small library of books from Reformed authors and bypassed the Calvary Chapel Church search altogether to look for a Reformed Baptist Church.

That's sort of my short story of my journey into Sovereign Grace, which happened in the Summer of '07. So, what's your story? Did you come from a Calvary Chapel or Pentecostal Church, or somewhere else? Did you stay there?

Was it a book, a certain sermon, a debate, or just reading the Word that opened your eyes to God's Sovereignty in salvation?

J.I. Packer on Calvinism and Arminianism

"One proclaims a God who saves; the other speaks of a God who enables man to save himself.

One view presents the three great acts of the Holy Trinity for the recovering of lost mankind—election by the Father, redemption by the Son, calling by the Spirit—as directed towards the same persons, and as securing their salvation infallibly.

The other view gives each act a different reference (the objects of redemption being all mankind, of calling, those who hear the gospel, and of election, those hearers who respond), and denies that any man’s salvation is secured by any of them.

The two theologies thus conceive the plan of salvation in quite different terms.

One makes salvation depend on the work of God, the other on a work of man; one regards faith as part of God’s gift of salvation, the other as man’s own contribution to salvation; one gives all the glory of saving believers to God, the other divides the praise between God, who, so to speak, built the machinery of salvation, and man, who by believing operated it.

Plainly these differences are important, and the permanent value of the “five points,” as a summary of Calvinism, is that they make clear the points at which, and the extent to which, these two conceptions are at variance."
-J.I. Packer in his introductory essay to John Owen’s The Death of Death in the Death of Christ

Help A Reader Looking For A Biblical Church

I recently received an email from a new reader who is looking for a solid Biblical Church. Some Founders-Friendly Churches in NJ can be found here. If you know of others close to the Atlantic City, NJ area, please reply to this post. Thanks!

"I was wondering if you had any listings for pastors or churches who teach the "true" Sovereignty of God by location? I live in Mays Landing NJ which is about 15 miles from Atlantic City. I have found far too many pastors who preach "easy believism" and who have succumbed to pragmatism and the ways of the modern world."

The Friend Who Alone Can Deliver And Save

"No human hand can break the chains of sinful habits. No mere resolution can free one from Satan's bondage. Only Christ can set the devil's captives free! Those who have long been trying in vain to reform, to break away from evil practices--see in Christ, the Friend who alone can deliver them and save them."

Happiness in God

"The gospel of Christ is the good news that at the cost of his Son's life, God has done everything necessary to enthrall is with what will make us eternally and ever-increasingly happy-namely, himself."
